Mặc dù Tokyo Ghoul là một bộ truyện tranh vô cùng nổi tiếng, tuy nhiên thực tế thì độc giả lại biết rất ít về người tạo nên siêu phẩm này. Đây là một điều dễ hiểu, bởi trong ngành công nghiệp Manga có rất rất nhiều họa sĩ hiếm khi chia sẻ thông tin cá nhân mặc dù đứa con tinh thần của họ vô cùng nổi tiếng. Sui Ishida – tác giả của Tokyo Ghoul cũng là người thuộc nhóm tác giả kín tiếng này. Thậm chí ông còn chưa lộ ảnh chụp của bản thân nữa cơ. Tuy nhiên, hôm nay chúng ta cùng “soi” vị họa sĩ này nhé.
1. Sui Ishida 28 tháng 12 tại quận Fukuoka, Nhật Bản. Khi người hâm mộ hỏi anh trông như thế nào, anh trả lời rằng mình giống như Yoshida Kazuo trong Tokyo Ghoul.
Trước khi trở thành mangaka, Ishida là một nghệ sĩ xăm hình. Ishida có một lối sống rất khỏe mạnh, anh không hút thuốc, thường xuyên chạy bộ, uống nhiều Calpis (một loại nước giải khát không ga).
2. Vào năm 2010, với tác phẩm Tokyo Ghoul Ishida Sui đã giành được giải thưởng Young Jump Grand Prix lần thứ thứ 113. Sau đó, vào tháng 3 năm 2011, One-shot Tokyo Ghoul được phát hành trên Tạp chí Miracle Jump Số 2. Đến tháng 9 năm 2011, Tokyo Ghoul bắt đầu phát hành thành series và được đăng trên Tuần san Young Jump số 41.
3. Khi người hâm mộ hỏi Ishida học vẽ ở đâu, anh trả lời rằng mình học từ những mangaka (ví dụ như Togashi Yoshihiro – tác giả của Hunter x Hunter) và các các họa sĩ minh họa khác. Ishida thường sao chép các bức họa của Hisoka và Orochimaru để luyện tập kĩ năng vẽ của mình. Anh cũng từng nói trên Twitter rằng mình là trợ lý của Togashi.
4. Ishida từng vẽ minh họa lại các nhân vật truyện tranh của các mangaka khác,như trong Naruto, One-Punch Man, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Final Fantasy và Himouto! Umaru-chan. Anh cũng minh họa cho tác phẩm Howl’s Moving Castle của đạo diễn Miyazaki Hayao.
5. Ishida sử dụng rất nhiều các mạng xã hội như là Twitter, Tumblr, Pixiv, Twipple, Twitch và FC2 Blog. Anh đáp ứng nhiệt tình với các tin nhắn từ fan hâm mộ (đặc biệt trên Twitter) khi anh có thời gian rảnh rỗi. Anh đăng bài lên Twitter hằng ngay, chủ yếu là các bức tranh vẽ, các thông báo mới. Trên Tumblr, anh thường đăng ảnh vẽ của mình kèm với thơ của anh. Anh dùng Twitch để livestream khi anh vẽ, nên fan có thể được “truyền hình trực tiếp” cách anh làm việc, nghe giọng nói của anh (dù đã bị biến giọng) và nghe loại nhạc anh đang nghe.
6. Ishida đã từng nói rằng anh thích chơi video game, như là Fallout và Oreshika 2, trước khi đi ngủ.
7. Ishida cũng rất thích các bộ phim điện ảnh Mỹ. Anh là fan bự của Star Wars (Chiến tranh giữa các vì sao). Anh thậm chí đã vẽ một bức hình chính bản thân đang vẽ Darth Vader, một trong những nhân vật then chốt trong phim. Ishida cũng thích series phim Prison Break (Vượt ngục) và nhân vật ưa thích của anh là Theodore “T-Bag” Bagwell do Robert Knepper thủ vai. Ishida cũng là fan của đạo diễn Tim Burton và các tác phẩm của ông.
8. Ishida thích mấy trò chọc ghẹo người khác, nhất là với fan của mình. Một ví dụ đó là khi Ishida đăng một tấm hình vẽ Hisoka kèm với lời thông báo về việc Hunter x Hunter sẽ quay lại với độc giả – Thật ra là một trò đùa trong ngày Cá tháng Tư của anh mà thôi.
9. Ishida là một “fan cuồng” mỗi khi nhắc về Togashi Yoshihiro và tác phẩm Hunter x Hunter của ông. Ishida cũng nói rằng anh rất thích vẽ Hisoka. Anh thường vẽ lại những bức hình của Hisoka để cải thiện kĩ năng của mình trước khi trở thành mangaka. Ishida thậm chí cũng đã vẽ một ngoại truyện về Hisoka.
10. Sau kỉ niệm 5 năm của manga Tokyo Ghoul, Ishida quyết định vẽ lại chương đầu tiên của bộ truyện, chủ yếu để xem kĩ năng của mình đã cải thiện như thế nào trong suốt 5 năm sáng tác Tokyo Ghoul. Và quả thật, sự thay đổi trong nét vẽ đã khiến fan của Ishida không tiếc lời khen ngợi.
